Actress Frances Sternhagen, known for the TV series Sex and the City, has died. and the films "The Mist", "Misery", "Julie and Julia: Cooking Happiness According to the Recipe" and many others. She was 93 years old.

Sternhagen died of natural causes at her home in New Rochelle, New York, her family said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “We continue to be inspired by her love and life,” they noted.

Frances performed on Broadway for over 50 years. She received two Tony Awards. and seven nominations. For all her success on stage, Sternhagen is best known to audiences for her roles as two mothers: she played Charlotte's bitchy mother-in-law Bunny McDougal in the TV series Sex and the City. and the imperious Esther Clavin in the NBC series Cheers. For both roles, the actress was nominated for an Emmy Award.

"I have to say, playing these snobbish old ladies is a lot of fun. It's always more fun to be obnoxious," Sternhagen told the Los Angeles Times in 2002. “I knew such women and I can imitate them.”

Her career spanned 63 years, from 1951 to 2014, since she first began performing on stage. In 1955, Frances met her future husband, Thomas A. Carlin, at the theater. They married the following year and were together until his death in 1991. During the marriage, the couple had six children.
