Alec Baldwin re-indicted for manslaughter

A New Mexico grand jury has re-indicted Alec Baldwin for manslaughter in the death of cameraman Galina Hutchins on the set of the film Rust. This was reported by Variety with reference to court documents.

Previously, the court dropped all charges against Baldwin. The actor’s defense considered the jury’s new decision a “terrible miscarriage of justice” and expressed confidence in victory.

“Mr. Baldwin had no reason to believe that there might have been a real bullet in the gun or on the set; he relied on professionals to assure him that there was no live ammunition in the weapon. We will challenge these charges, and we will win,” the star’s lawyers said.

Cameraman Galina Hutchins died in October 2021. While filming the western film Rust in Santa Fe, Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun, accidentally killing her and injuring the film's director, Joel Sousa. The weapon was supposed to be loaded with blank cartridges, but it contained one live bullet. The actor claimed that he did not pull the trigger, but merely cocked and released the hammer, following the instructions of Hutchins, who framed the shot. However, a forensic examination of the weapon showed that the gun could only fire when the trigger was pulled.

If convicted, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.
