Nicole Kidman posed with a snake for the cover of Vogue
Nicole Kidman became the heroine of a cover story in the February issue of the Australian edition of Vogue. On the cover, which was shot by renowned fashion photographer Steven Klein, the 56-year-old actress poses with a snake in her arms. In an interview, the star spoke about her love of extreme sports, the best age of a woman and her new role.
Doing a photo shoot with a reptile was Nicole's idea: she loves trying new things and, as she says, it "allows me to do things that I wouldn't do." In addition, the actress adds, she thinks snakes are “very beautiful.”
“I like them,” Kidman clarifies with a laugh. "I love my kids, I love my husband. I think it [loving snakes] has something to do with the way I skydive or scuba dive."
Nicole is sure that a woman’s life begins at 33 years old. "They say 33 is a very powerful age. Someone told me it's the age when you start living." The actress turned 33 when filming of the musical “Moulin Rouge” ended, the role in which brought her her first Oscar nomination.
On January 25, the world premiere of Lulu Wang's series "The Expats" will take place, in which Nicole played the main role. The actress recalls that in 2017, after a conversation at the Cannes Film Festival with Meryl Streep, she promised to work with a female director every year and a half and sticks to it.
The actress herself found Lulu Wang to work on “The Expats,” which is produced by her company Blossom Films. For Kidman, it is important to support talented and young directors by offering them cooperation: she knows how to find a person at the very moment when his star is rising. This happened with Chan-Wook Park on Stoker, Jonathan Glazer on Birth, Yorgos Lanthimos on The Killing of a Sacred Deer.
"I like to come in and say, 'Well, now I'm going to help support the new giants that are on the horizon,'" says Kidman. "And there are a lot of them out there. And they come towards us, fast and furious. Wang is one of them. I thought, “This is the only person who can make The Expats.”
The film adaptation of The Expats tells the story of three American women living in Hong Kong whose lives change when Kidman's character Margaret loses her son one night in the thick of the Mong Kok markets. Nicole's new role, like most others, is about a desperate and confused woman who has to go through difficult life events.
“Resilience,” Kidman notes, is what she shares with women in their darkest moments. "It's one of those things that I'm really fascinated and attracted to and that I found in myself. It means that you have to fall before you can get back up..."
