“I met the love of my life, but we needed to grow up and do other things.” Jennifer Lopez on marriage to Ben Affleck
Jennifer Lopez spoke with Variety about why she decided to marry Ben Affleck many years after they had an affair that ended in a broken engagement.
According to the singer, it took her two decades to “understand herself” before “the universe opened up” and allowed her to reunite with her former lover. “I met the love of my life, but for some reason... we needed to grow up and do other things,” she said.
"We both moved on and started other relationships and had kids with other people, but, you know, in my head I was like, 'This was it.'
"When we met again, I couldn't believe it, and I don't think he could either. It wasn't at all what we ever planned. In the past, we actually started to move on without each other, but when we reunited, we immediately understood everything."
All the time they weren't together, Lopez was getting to know herself. "I was trying to become a better person, figure myself out, and become the best person I could be so I could be a great mother, and a great example for my children. When I got divorced, it started a new phase of me trying to figure myself out, relationships and everything else." It was after this that she resumed her romance with Ben Affleck. “I was like, ‘I’m good on my own, I’m okay, I love my life.’ And when I got to that point, I think that’s when the universe kind of opened up to me and I was like, OK, now you’re ready.” ".
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez got married in 2022, 20 years after breaking up in the 2000s; the couple previously celebrated their first wedding anniversary.
