"I thought drugs and alcohol would help me cope with my anxiety, but they didn't." Cara Delevingne opens up about her struggle with addiction
In a new interview with The Times, Cara Delevingne spoke about her struggle with alcohol and drug addiction and how paparazzi photos influenced it.
She said she used alcohol and drugs to cope with her anxiety. "I used to think that drugs and alcohol would help me cope with my anxiety. But they didn't, they kept me sad and super depressed," she said.
"I feel like I have my power back now and nothing is controlling me anymore," Kara added.
Kara admitted that she first got drunk as a child, at her aunt's wedding. "I was eight. What a crazy age to get drunk," Kara said.
31-year-old Delevingne is currently sober — since 2022. Then the paparazzi photographed her in an inadequate state after the Burning Man festival. According to the model, this was a "wake-up call" that brought her to her senses: the model saw how she looked from the outside, and she did not like it.
Now she only attends festivals sober. She recently attended Glastonbury with her friend Anya Taylor-Joy. Kara noted that without drugs and alcohol she was very tired and could not stay awake for long, but she still had fun.
Staying sober helped her cope with the stress of a fire that broke out in her California home. The model had decorated it herself and it meant a lot to her. "It still affected me deeply. It's very sad," Kara said.
After the Met Gala in May, rumors emerged that Cara was allegedly using drugs again, but the model denied them.
Last year, Cara Delevingne admitted to alcohol and drug addiction, and also spoke about mental health issues that pushed her to an unhealthy lifestyle. The model underwent rehabilitation, took up yoga, and also began to draw inspiration and strength from creativity.
