"He did it in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024." George Clooney calls on Joe Biden to save democracy by leaving the race

Actor George Clooney, who is also one of the organizers of fundraisers for the Democratic Party, called on Joe Biden to drop out of the election race. His column was published by The New York Times.

George Clooney said last month that he co-hosted the largest fundraiser for any Democratic candidate in history: President Joe Biden's reelection. "I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As vice president and as president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him. I believe in his character. I believe in his morality. He has won many of the battles he has faced over the last four years. But the one battle he cannot win is the battle against time. None of us can. It pains me to say this, but the Joe Biden I spoke to three weeks ago at a fundraiser was not the Joe Biden of 2010. He was not even the Joe Biden of 2020. He was the same person we all saw at the debates."

George Clooney said Democratic leaders need to stop telling everyone that 51 million people didn't see what everyone saw at the Joe Biden-Donald Trump debate. "We are all so terrified of a second Trump term that we have chosen to ignore all the warning signs. As Democrats, we hold our breath or turn down the volume every time we see the president we respect step off Air Force One or return to the microphone to answer an unasked question."

According to George Clooney, it's all about age, he believes that the party will not win with such a candidate and reminded that the Republican candidate, Donald Trump, has been convicted of 34 crimes, so he should not participate in the elections either. He concluded his speech with the words. "Joe Biden is a hero. He saved democracy in 2020. We need him to do it again in 2024."

Donald Trump responded to the actor's column in his usual manner: he posted a video meme on Instagram* in which George Clooney tries to fire Biden with the words "don't take it personally," and the president tries to justify himself: "I was just having a bad day."

The US presidential election is scheduled for November 5. Biden and Trump debated on CNN on June 28, where the Democratic candidate looked very tired: as he later justified himself, he had not gotten enough sleep due to the flights and had a cold. After the debate, the channel conducted a poll, according to which 67% of respondents gave the victory to Trump, and 33% to Biden. The next day, the NYT issued an editorial statement asking Biden to withdraw from the election race. Similar statements were made by the candidate's fellow party members in Congress and public figures, including writer Stephen King. Biden refused to withdraw from the election and called on dissatisfied Democrats to nominate their own candidates at the party convention, which will be held in August.
