The Internet is calling for the "cancellation" of Oscar nominee Carla Gascon: she called Selena Gomez a "rich rat" and criticized Adele for her "loose skin" after losing weight
A scandal is brewing online around 52-year-old Carla Sofia Gascon, who became the first transgender* woman nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category.
The reason for the star's potential "cancellation" was her old social media posts, which were found and translated from Spanish for Variety by writer Sarah Hagee. In one of those posts, Gascon spoke rudely about Selena Gomez after she took a photo with Hailey Bieber. Recall that 32-year-old Selena and 28-year-old Hailey are still being pitted against each other by their fans because the latter married the former's ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber.
"She's a rich rat who plays poor every chance she gets and never stops pestering her ex and his wife," Gascon wrote.
In another post, she criticized the appearance of the slimmed-down 36-year-old Adele, hinting that she hadn't bothered to get rid of excess skin on her arms: "Covid passed, and she went overboard with the sleeves. Or she went under the knife, and the excess skin on her arms remained."
Fans of both singers were outraged by these comments from Carla Sofia. Thus, one of Adele's fans wrote: "This is why Adele got an Oscar, and you won't get yours." At the moment, various social networks are full of calls to "cancel" and deprive Gascon of the nomination for the most prestigious award in the film industry.
It should be noted that Gascon’s accounts also contained other hateful posts about her colleagues. She also spoke negatively about Muslims, complaining that there were “too many” of them in Spain and that in Islam “women are not respected.” The actress also criticized the Oscars: “The Oscars ceremony is increasingly reminiscent of a ceremony of independent and protest films. I couldn’t even figure out whether I was watching an Afro-Korean festival or a Black Lives Matter demonstration. And the outfits on the red carpet were ugly.”
After Gascon was publicly criticized for her comments, she issued an official statement to the DailyMail: “I want to acknowledge the pain that discussions of my old posts on social media have caused many. As a member of a marginalized community, I understand this suffering all too well and deeply regret any pain I have caused others. I have spent my life fighting for a better world. I believe that light will always triumph over darkness.”
It is noteworthy that Selena Gomez, whom Carla Sofia called a “rich rat,” starred alongside Gascon in the film “Emilia Perez,” which became the leader in the number of Oscar nominations.
