Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner have denied accusations that they leaked Kim's famous sex tape online.
Kim Kardashian and her mother, Kris Jenner, have formally and under oath denied rapper Ray J's accusations that the infamous sex tape featuring Kim and Ray was a staged stunt. The celebrities testified to this in court, according to TMZ.
Kim and Kris have since filed written statements categorically denying long-standing rumors that the tape was staged. In her statement, Kim directly called her ex-boyfriend Ray J's claims a lie. "His claim that I plotted with my mother and others to release a sex tape, deceive the public, and file a 'fake' lawsuit against a porn company to 'create publicity' is a lie," the publication quotes Kim Kardashian as saying.
Kris Jenner also called accusations that she orchestrated the "commercial exploitation" of the video "absolutely false."
"The idea that I orchestrated or produced sex tapes featuring my daughter, or was in any way involved in the creation or distribution of any such tapes, is not only completely untrue, but deeply offensive and harmful. It has haunted me for decades," Chris said.
As a reminder, Kim and Ray J (real name William Ray Norwood Jr.) dated from 2003 to 2006. In October 2003, while vacationing in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, they filmed themselves having sex. In March 2007, the video somehow found its way into the hands of the porn company Vivid Entertainment and was published under the title "Kim Kardashian, Superstar." At the time, 26-year-old Kim was a little-known stylist and friend of Paris Hilton. The scandalous leak (or, according to Ray J, a planned release) instantly made her a household name. In just six weeks, the video earned $1.4 million in sales. Kim filed a lawsuit against Vivid but ultimately settled for $5 million. Almost simultaneously, the reality show "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" hit screens, making Kim a superstar: her net worth is now estimated at $1.9 billion, and she has hundreds of millions of followers on Instagram*.
The standoff between Ray J and the Kardashian-Jenner family erupted in October 2025, when Kim filed a defamation lawsuit against Ray J. The lawsuit stemmed from his statements in a documentary about Sean "Diddy" Combs, in which the rapper implied that racketeering charges "would be appropriate" against Kardashian and also stated on air that "this [case] is worse than Diddy's."
In response, Ray J countersued, accusing the family of violating an agreement that prohibited both parties from publicly discussing the video incident. Furthermore, he insisted that Kardashian and Jenner were behind the video leak in 2007.
In her recent testimony, Kris Jenner described Ray J's actions as "public terrorizing" her daughter for two decades and emphasized that she filed a defamation lawsuit for the first time in her career because she could no longer "see my daughter cry over lies." Kim herself also expressed concern that the scandal could jeopardize her long-held dream of becoming a lawyer and is forcing her to have "difficult conversations" with her four children with Kanye West—North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
This isn't the only scandal the Kardashian-Jenner family has been embroiled in recently. In early 2026, "photogate" erupted: photos of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Kris Jenner's 70th birthday party first appeared online and then suddenly disappeared. As Kim explained, the publication was authorized, but the Duke and Duchess of Sussex later requested the photos be removed—the party took place on the eve of Remembrance Day, an important day of mourning in the UK, and they didn't want to appear disrespectful. Although Kris maintains a warm relationship with Meghan, it was reported that an enraged Kim urged her mother to cut off contact with the Sussexes, believing they were "bringing drama to their family brand."
