Sofia Coppola's daughter says she was raised by nannies, not her mother.

The daughter of director Sofia Coppola ("The Virgin Suicides," "Lost in Translation"), 19-year-old Romy Mars, spoke about her difficult childhood and stated that she saw her nannies more often than her own mother.

The girl's comments appeared on TikTok while she was answering questions from her followers. In response to one follower's humorous comment that Romy was literally "created by Sofia Coppola," she responded, "I was raised more by other women."

Romy went on to say that while her mother was away, one of the nannies gave her illegal substances: "We smoked together on the fire escape and discussed problems with her boyfriend and mother until I fell asleep." The girl was only 11 years old at the time.

This isn't the first time Romy has opened up about her childhood: she previously confessed how, as a teenager, she tried to charter a plane to have dinner with a friend in Maryland. She tried to pay for the trip with her father's (Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars) bank card, but it didn't work out. As a result, her parents had a serious talk with Romy about her behavior.

Romy is currently studying at Lehigh University and is exploring acting, modeling, and singing. She has already landed a cameo role as a reporter in her grandfather Francis Ford Coppola's film "Megalopolis" and appeared in an advertising campaign for the fashion house Marc Jacobs.

As a reminder, Romy's mother, Sofia Coppola, is the third child of director Francis Ford Coppola, the creator of such iconic works as "Apocalypse Now," "The Godfather" trilogy, and "Dracula." In 2004, Sofia won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for "Lost in Translation."

Since 2011, Coppola has been married to Thomas Mars, the frontman of the band Phoenix. She met her husband on the set of The Virgin Suicides, where Thomas contributed music to the film. In addition to Romy, the couple also have a 15-year-old daughter, Cosima.

In a 2026 interview with Elle, Sofia said she supports her daughter in everything and enjoys following her social media: "She's an artist, and I really enjoy watching that."
