Harry Styles debuts 'What Is Enough' at MSG in moving Liam Payne tribute

Harry Styles marked the second anniversary of Liam Payne's death with a song nobody had heard before. On Friday night at Madison Square Garden, he introduced “What Is Enough,” an unreleased acoustic track, to a sold-out crowd during his Together, Together residency. Fans were hearing the song for the first time — not as a streaming release, but as a tribute played live.
Styles is in the middle of an MSG run that continues through October 31. Two years to the day since Payne died at 31 after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he paused the show to address the packed room.
“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” he told the arena. “And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”
“It’s just about looking after each other.”
“I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t,” he added before picking up the guitar.
A song he wrote “about two years ago”
Styles set up the moment carefully: “There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn’t be here without. I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”
The gently melodic tune includes the lines, “I’m not wise enough / But I wrote you a letter just to burn it up / And watch it rise like you’re in the sky.”
Styles and Payne were original members of One Direction, from the group’s 2010 launch through its 2015 split. Rolling Stone posted a clip after the performance, and with the track still unreleased, that footage is the closest thing to an official listen.
Friday became the most personal night of the New York run so far: a song written privately “about two years ago” finally aired in public, less like a single than a eulogy for a friend.
