Tom Cruise to receive AFI Life Achievement Award in 2027 after a $13 billion career

Tom Cruise has been selected to receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award — the highest honor for a career in American film. The American Film Institute will salute him at a gala tribute inside Hollywood’s Dolby Theater on April 24, 2027.
Considered the top prize for a lifetime in the movies, the award goes each year to a single honoree whose work has furthered the cinematic arts and stood the test of time in the eyes of scholars, critics, peers and audiences.
Announcing the pick on Tuesday, AFI Board of Trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy kept her praise direct: “Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together.”
“That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world,” Kennedy added. “It is AFI’s honor to present him with the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award.”
A five-decade run that keeps hitting
The numbers back the choice. Cruise’s career spans more than five decades, and his films have earned nearly $13 billion in worldwide box office. He is a three-time Oscar nominee — best actor for “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire,” supporting actor for “Magnolia” — and earned a best picture nod as a producer of “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The credits run from “Risky Business” and “Top Gun” through “A Few Good Men,” “Interview With the Vampire,” “The Firm,” “Minority Report” and the “Mission: Impossible” films. Cruise is currently on screens in “Digger,” and he is set to reunite with Anne Hathaway in another “Days of Thunder” chapter slated for 2028.
Chosen by the institute’s Board of Trustees, the honor most recently went to Eddie Murphy. Francis Ford Coppola, Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Julie Andrews and Nicole Kidman are among the past decade’s other winners — a list Cruise now joins as one of Hollywood’s most durable leading men.
