John Galliano's Zara collection reworks old stock from $29.90

John Galliano's long-awaited Zara drop has a name as ornate as the clothes themselves: Re{form} Zara Authored by the Couturier John Galliano. The collection, revealed this week, starts at just $29.90 — and it was built not from fresh fabric but from garments Zara already had sitting in its stockrooms.

"Basically, it was the garments that were sitting around," Galliano tells Vogue. "They became my working prototypes." Rather than design from scratch, the designer took Zara archetypes — a long wool-mix coat, a slip dress, a cotton shirt — and cut, pressed, and flipped them inside out to turn each one into a Galliano original. A coat's lapels extend and its tails creep down the leg; a lace slip inches up the body until it becomes little more than a ruff at the neck; a shirt sized up to quadruple XL turns into a trompe l'oeil leather jacket.

"It's what hackers do, what DJs do — resampling, digital mixing," Galliano says of the method. "It's the grammar of today."

From a polite 'no' to a bonnet-heavy yes

The partnership nearly didn't happen. Galliano first met Marta Ortega Perez, Inditex's nonexecutive chair, in 2022, and when she floated a collaboration his answer was a flat no — he was still creative director at Maison Margiela. After leaving in 2024, he spent months quiet, deadheading roses in his garden in Picardy, until a lunch with Ortega Perez produced the pitch. "She said: 'Yes, let's do it,'" Galliano recalls.

The brief was no-holds-barred. "I had no intentions to dumb down," he says, and the result channels his 1984 Saint Martin's graduation collection Les Incroyables — a band of aristocratic dandy rebels from the French Revolution, complete with beribboned bonnets, cravats, and bicorne hats borrowed from Abel Gance's 1927 Napoleon. Bias-cut jewel-tone gowns and sheer tulle veils sit alongside cropped tailcoats.

The price gap tells the whole story: in January a Galliano couture piece for Christian Dior sold for 663,000 euros at auction, while this collection opens under $30. "It's an honor to bring John's magic to a broad audience for the first time," Ortega Perez says.
