Vogue's fall maximalism: ties, silk scarves and brooches piled to the neck

Fall's "quiet luxury" moment is over. Vogue's new trend report, "Up to Our Necks," declares the season a full-tilt maximalist fantasy, with the tie — plus silk scarves, brooches and gloves — piled on in amber, rust, burgundy and gold.
Photographed by Tom Blesch and styled by Cara Cano for the magazine's October 16 story, the looks treat the neck as the canvas. A Prada cardigan and dress get a vintage scarf; a Louis Vuitton jacket and shirt stay classic until a second tie goes on; a graphic Loewe dress is sharpened with shirting and a silky tie.
Menswear staples trade stiffness for sprezzatura.
That is the underlying move: taking tailored, "serious" pieces — the tie, the button-up, the blazer — and loosening them with wild color and pattern. A Chloé blazer gets a vintage corsage turned choker, and a Celine coat is warmed with a paisley scarf and a Longines watch. A Chanel jacket reaches for a camellia brooch instead of restraint.
The tie gets the starring role, but it is rarely the loudest thing in the frame. A Dries Van Noten floral-jacquard jacket and heritage plaids "zing against a classic striped tie's zag," while Miu Miu's buttery leather and soft knits offer a tactile take on tonal dressing. Brooches do heavy lifting too: a Bernadette Wild Rose ($550) or a Chanel Camellia ($1,050) turns a collar into the outfit.
How to wear it without the four-figure bill
The styling leans on runway labels — a Burberry coat, a $5,200 Miu Miu leather blouson, a $6,500 Dior coat — but the takeaway is cheap to copy. Vogue itself lists a $30 vintage necktie from Poshmark and a $158 J.Crew soft-washed sweater in one look. Grab a secondhand silk tie, a bold checked shirt and one brooch, and the maximalist formula is done.
The timing is deliberate: as the source puts it, nature is trading summer greens for "a rich tapestry of amber, rust, burgundy, and gold," and wardrobes are following. Expect the neck-up pile-on to move from office blazers to oversized knits all season.
