Nicole Kidman's "Birkin" bangs were cut to feel like Sydney's salt air

Nicole Kidman has a new fringe for a record-setting occasion: Chanel's first-ever runway show in Australia. The actress debuted longer, wispy "Birkin" bangs at the re-staging of the French house's Biarritz cruise collection in Sydney, and her longtime hairstylist Adir Abergel says the whole cut was built around one idea - hair that never looks like it tried too hard.

"Having Nicole back home in Sydney for [the show] felt really special," Abergel told Vogue. Kidman was born in Honolulu but moved to Sydney as a child, so the homecoming mattered. "Matthieu's collection is all about the seaside, and Sydney lives that: the harbor, the sandstone, the salt in the air. I wanted her hair to feel like part of that world. It's easy, sun-kissed, a little undone, and cool without trying."

The fringe is the centerpiece. Abergel cut the bangs "soft and wispy, long enough to graze the brow and broken up so they move," then blended them into Kidman's long layers so the whole shape falls naturally around her face. That extra length is what makes them so flexible: wear them straight across, sweep them to one side, or part them in the middle and they turn into a curtain-bang frame.

"It looks as right with a tuxedo as it does with sunglasses at the beach."

From short and round to long and undone

Kidman's new look is an evolution rather than a reset. She debuted shorter, rounder bangs at Chanel's show in October of last year, after a fluffier curtain-style the season before. "There's a real overlap between Australian ease and French-girl nonchalance," Abergel said. This longer, broken-up version is where the two meet - no blunt line, just a soft frame that moves when she does.

Across his client list, Abergel knows how to build a signature chop; he's also behind Kristen Stewart's punky crop and Charlize Theron's architectural micro bob. For Kidman, the brief was lower-maintenance: "It's hair you don't have to think about," and it can go from rave to red carpet without a rethink.
