17-year-old Mathis Albert made USMNT history before the Chile brawl erupted

The U.S. Men's National Team beat Chile 4-2 in St. Louis on Tuesday, but the final score was only half the story. At the final whistle, a bench-clearing brawl erupted that forced head coach Mauricio Pochettino to wade in and separate the two squads.

Mathis Albert wrote his name into the record books before the trouble started, becoming the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history at 17 years and 140 days old. Eighteen-year-old Julian Hall also scored, as Pochettino's young side posted back-to-back four-goal outings following a 4-1 win over Peru.

The chaos began when Chile winger Leandro Hernandez appeared to poke USMNT goalkeeper Brian Schwake with his boot as Schwake lay on the turf holding the ball. Crystal Palace defender Chris Richards reacted quickest, confronting Hernandez and shoving him, and players from both benches charged on while captain Tyler Adams needed to be physically restrained.

Richards was blunt postgame, pinning the flare-up on Chile's frustration after a deserved loss. "Obviously, they're frustrated," he said. "They're losing the game, deservedly. But then, if they want to foul our goalie, want to kick him when he's on the ground?" He framed the American response as team unity — "the first thing to buy into is family."

"They're on our home soil, so that's not going to fly."

A hometown goodbye amid the mayhem

The brawl capped an emotional night in St. Louis, which doubled as Tim Ream's hometown send-off. The Charlotte FC defender was recognized before kickoff and confirmed he is stepping away from international duty to make room for younger players. Richards said the group wanted to "send him off well." "Let's shoot it straight here," Ream said. "The kids are getting younger and younger, and I don't mean my own kids." He added: "That's it for me. I'm proud of being part of something for 16 years, but it is time to step away and stay away from playing with the national team."
