Leclerc sweeps Mexico City practice as Hamilton's Ferrari breaks down mid-lap

Charles Leclerc owned Friday at the Mexico City Grand Prix, topping both practice sessions - but the feel-good Ferrari headline has a catch. His team-mate Lewis Hamilton was on course to go fastest in second practice before his car quit on him in the final sector, leaving him parked at the side of the track.

Leclerc's best lap of 1:17.827 put him just over a tenth clear of McLaren's Lando Norris and Mercedes' George Russell, two of the ten drivers who had sat out the opening session to hand their cars to rookies. It was a tidy statement from a driver who has been quietly consistent all season.

Hamilton had looked sharp. Approaching the midway point of the session he was flying on a push lap when what appeared to be an engine issue struck. He nursed the car to the line, but his engineer told him to pull over immediately, ending his session early and costing him the race-simulation data his rivals were busy banking.

Verstappen and Lawson collide

The other big story of the afternoon happened just behind the leaders. Max Verstappen, three tenths off the pace in fifth, tangled with his former team-mate Liam Lawson in a bizarre early-session clash. Verstappen tried to pass the Racing Bulls driver, Lawson defended and held his line, and after several more corners of scrapping the pair made contact. Debris on the track forced a red flag.

The two drivers - whose teams are both part of the Red Bull family - were summoned to see the stewards after the session. Verstappen's current team-mate Isack Hadjar finished just behind him in sixth.

Further back, teenage Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli was a tenth down on Russell in fourth, and he only needs to finish ninth on Sunday to become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion. Qualifying goes off at 9pm on Saturday, with the race at 8pm on Sunday.
