Lymphatic drainage: 4 daily habits experts say actually work

Lymphatic drainage has become a wellness obsession, from sculpting facial massages to body brushes and compression boots. But the benefits of a healthy lymphatic system go well beyond what you can see in the mirror, and keeping it working does not require a standing appointment with your facialist.

The lymphatic system is sometimes called the "Cinderella of medicine" - underestimated, yet doing a huge share of the essential work. Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Gerald M. Lemole, author of Lymph & Longevity, describes it as a "secret river of health," a network of vessels that collects excess fluid, transports immune cells and carries waste away from cells.

Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no pump of its own. "You are the pump," says Ada Ooi, a traditional Chinese medicine specialist and founder of London's 001 London Longevity Clinic. That means everyday movement, breathing and simple habits do the work. Here are four to add to your routine.

Breathe, bounce, and eat your plants

Deep diaphragmatic breathing - the kind that expands your belly rather than lifting your shoulders - changes pressure in the chest and abdomen to move lymph. "The largest lymphatic vessels and the body's main lymphatic ducts are located in the chest cavity," Lemole explains. "Every deep breath helps circulate the lymph." A few slow breaths morning and evening is enough.

Movement is the body's natural lymph pump, and it does not need to be strenuous. A brisk walk, stairs, calf raises or even ankle rotations all help, says esthetician Cecily Braden. For something more playful, there is rebounding - the mini-trampoline workout favored by Gwyneth Paltrow, Eva Longoria and Miranda Kerr. The evidence that bouncing beats other movement is still limited, but a few minutes in the morning is an easy mood boost.

Qigong, the centuries-old Chinese practice of slow, flowing movement with controlled breathing, brings several lymph-moving mechanisms together at once. "Two or three movements performed slowly for ten minutes will be far more beneficial to you than a 20 minute sequence done at full speed," Ooi says.

Finally, what you eat and drink matters. Staying hydrated supports lymph production, and polyphenols - plant compounds in berries, beans, vegetables and tea - are being studied as "lymphagogues" that may encourage flow. The simplest approach: eat a varied, plant-rich diet and drink enough water.
