"Went from fear to gratitude." Angelina Jolie spoke about the traumas she experienced and how they affected her life
Angelina Jolie spoke about how her mother's early death affected her in Variety's Actors on Actors project.
"There was a person in my life who said that I couldn't sing. I was singing something not very difficult at the time, but he laughed at me. And it really hurt me. Maybe it (the loss of vocals - Ed.) happened when I lost my mother, maybe when someone hurt me. Whatever it was, it made me weaker. I would have lived my whole life without discovering my voice. So I went from fear to gratitude. It was hard for me to find my voice and give it free rein," said the actress, who recently played the role of opera singer Maria Callas.
Jolie's mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, died at age 56 after an eight-year battle with ovarian and breast cancer. The experience had an impact on her daughter. After taking a test, Jolie learned she had a genetic predisposition to cancer. She then underwent a preventative double mastectomy, removing her ovaries and fallopian tubes.
Angelina Jolie also spoke about the image of a strong woman that is often attributed to her. "Some people see it as strength. But it's not. It's a manifestation of your feminine grace. It doesn't mean that you don't suffer. You don't give in to self-pity. I think there is an opinion that we don't want care, softness and love. But that's what a woman needs. It just needs to be sincere," she noted.
Earlier, Jolie spoke about her psychological problems and that her children save her from loneliness. Let us recall that the star is raising three biological children from her ex-husband Brad Pitt and three adopted children - 18-year-old Shiloh Nouvel, 16-year-old twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, 23-year-old Maddox, 19-year-old Zahara and 21-year-old Pax.
