Sydney Sweeney has once again posed for a brand that joked about her "great genes."

28-year-old Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney has once again become the face of American Eagle. The ad comes almost a year after a high-profile scandal that nearly led to her being "cancelled." The first campaign featured a play on the words "jeans" and "genes," resulting in the phrase "Sydney Sweeney has great genes." Users accused Sweeney of promoting racism and Nazism, as well as eugenics.
In the new photo shoot, Sweeney poses in flared jeans and a simple white tank top, as well as ripped denim shorts and a T-shirt. In one shot, she also appears in a blue knit top while sitting on the sand, and in another, she tries on a light-colored blouse.
This time, the campaign's slogan is: Syd for Short: American Eagle Jean Shorts. The campaign title is a play on the actress's name: Syd is short for Sydney, and "for short" is short (a reference to the shorts she advertises).
As a reminder, Sweeney's first ad for American Eagle aired in late July 2025 and sparked a furious backlash on social media. The ad's slogan played on the homophony between the English words "jeans" and "genes," resulting in the phrase "Sydney Sweeney has great genes." Many users believed the ad promoted eugenics and white supremacy, as the actress is a blue-eyed, blonde woman with a "Nordic" appearance. The brand itself responded that the ad "has always been about jeans," and Sweeney admitted in an interview with People that she was "surprised" by the public backlash. She was later pressured to apologize publicly, but she refused.
It was later revealed that the actress is a registered Republican voter in Florida, which added fuel to the fire: in Hollywood, where most celebrities traditionally support the Democratic Party, such views are met with intense opposition. Donald Trump himself publicly praised Sweeney, calling her ad "hot."
Recently, it was reported that Sweeney has been subjected to yet another online "cancellation": this time, users are criticizing the actress for sexualizing a child character. Previously, 1950s Hollywood sex symbol Kim Novak spoke out against Sydney Sweeney playing her in a biopic because she "always looks sexualized." Now, online commentators also believe that Zendaya wants to distance herself from her controversial Euphoria co-star to avoid tarnishing her reputation.
