Ukraine's richest man bought luxury real estate in Monaco for nearly half a billion dollars.

59-year-old oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, considered Ukraine's richest man, purchased luxury real estate in Monaco for a record $554 million. According to Bloomberg, the purchase agreement was signed shortly before the start of a special military operation in 2022.
A five-story, 2,500-square-meter apartment with 21 rooms on the seafront was acquired by Akhmetov's holding company, System Capital Management. The property is located in the prestigious Mareterra neighborhood, which was inaugurated by Prince Albert II in 2024. In addition to balconies and terraces overlooking the Mediterranean, the apartment features a private pool, a jacuzzi, and at least eight parking spaces.
In the early 1990s, Rinat Akhmetov co-founded ARS, a coal trading company. In 1996, he became president of Shakhtar Donetsk football club, and in 2000, he founded System Capital Management. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, the magnate's net worth exceeds $7 billion.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Shakhtar Donetsk football club in 2011, Rinat Akhmetov paid for a $500,000 performance by American singer Rihanna in Donetsk. That same year, the billionaire purchased the most expensive apartment in London's One Hyde Park residential complex for over $222 million.
Rinat Akhmetov currently resides near Kyiv, where he manages his assets. He is known to be married to Lilia Smirnova, who chairs the audit committee of System Capital Management and has two sons with him: Damir and Almir. There is also information online about Akhmetov's "unofficial" family: the billionaire allegedly has two more children with Donetsk native Alina Litvinenko.
