Javier Bardem explains why he supports Palestine despite the threat of "cancellation"

57-year-old actor Javier Bardem is featured in the latest issue of Variety magazine. In an interview with the magazine, Bardem explained why he continues to support Palestine in the Arab-Israeli conflict, despite the threat of its complete "cancellation" in Hollywood.
"I've always felt like I have the right to condemn what I consider wrong," Bardem admitted in a conversation with the publication.
Recently, the Spanish actor has been actively advocating for Palestinian freedom, despite pro-Israel sentiments in Hollywood. First, Bardem wore a keffiyeh—a traditional Palestinian men's headscarf—to the Emmy Awards. Then, he bluntly stated his position during the Best International Film Oscar ceremony: "No war, and a free Palestine." In response, the entire audience applauded the actor.
Bardem says he feels the effects of this statement personally, but no one speaks about it openly. He often hears rumors that many producers don't want to collaborate with him to avoid problems: "Yes, I heard that they were going to call me about a project, but they changed their mind. Or that a brand was going to invite me to participate in an advertising campaign, but now they can't. It's okay. I live in Spain. But American studios aren't the only place where this happens."
Bardem has several projects coming out soon. In just a few weeks, the actor will be presenting Rodrigo Sorogoyen's "Beloved" at the Cannes Film Festival. Furthermore, the blockbuster "Dune: Part III" is also set to hit theaters soon. So, according to Bardem, Hollywood's producer policies are changing, and it's no longer so easy to "cancel" an actor for his stance.
As a reminder, model Bella Hadid previously suffered for her support of Palestine. Following her comments calling for an end to hostilities in Palestine, sportswear brand Adidas removed an advertising campaign featuring the model.
At the same time, Javier Bardem and his wife, actress Penelope Cruz, with whom they are raising two children – 15-year-old Leonardo and 12-year-old Luna – have consistently supported Palestine since 2014 and continue to appear in films and advertising campaigns.
